A gadget all too familiar with the music studio environment is a good a set of headphones. I think we all know how imperative headphones are for music… whether you’re into production or not. And today, We’re not just talking about any old set of headphones, but the rather, Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro Headphones. I will specifically be reviewing the 250 Ohm version of this range.
In the last 10 odd years, Beyerdynamic DT770 pro headphones have increasingly become popular amongst audio engineers and music producers. They’ve also become a standard for many professionals in the industry and, with their affordable price point, have shot to popularity within the circle of pro producers internationally.
Getting to know Beyerdynamic (A brief background)
Dubbed by some as legendary, this is a company with an incredibly long and reputable history behind it. Beyerdynamic is a German audio equipment manufacturer founded in back in 1924. It is best renowned for its production of headsets, microphones and, of course, their headphones. It developed its first ever set of dynamic headphones toward the end of the 1930s… So we have very close to 80 years of German design and engineering expertise going into our little object of review.
But without further ado, let’s dive straight into our review of the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 250 ohm headphones.
The Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro Headphones (Overview)
Having debuted the initial version of these headphones back in the early 1980s (along with the DT880 and DT990 Pro series), the DT770 has millions of loyal users the world over.

1. Quality of the Sound
So… the most important factor here, right? First and foremost how do these headphones perform?
Boasting an impressively distinctive sound when it comes to performance, these are wonderful for fine-tuning those really fine sonic details. Also, offering virtually no form of latency at all, the headphones are actually pretty swift in their response rate. The DT770 250 ohm headphones also offer a superbly bright sound (in comparison to the 80 ohms). Because of this, the general mids and particularly the highs are a little more vibrant, however, these are nuances, and the projected sound is rather pleasing overall.
However, despite pointing out the fact the mid-range frequencies on these headphones are on the brighter end, they are not all that aggressive. Overall the projected balance between frequencies is harmonious, and not harsh in the least. The Beyerdynamic DT770 headphones provide a crisp, detailed and precise performance, without being heavier on the bass. Heavier bass is more of an 80 ohms nuance, however, lower frequencies are produced well here also, with a punchy detail.
Noise Cancellation
The Beyerdynamic DT770 pro headphones fall under the Closed Back Headphones category. This type of headphone is basically completely closed off around the back. Insulating sound well within each earpiece is the primary function of closed-back headphones. Also, the sound is prevented from leaking out while recording, and also blocking out a lot more noise. The DT770 headphones, being a long time crowd favorite, perform this function pretty well.
Beyerdynamic says that you should get approximately 18dB of noise cancellation from the DT770 250 ohms. Many users of the headphones attest to this. The headphones isolate sound brilliantly.
Soundstage and Imaging
Soundstage and Imaging basically enable you to have a perceived width and depth of sound. The soundstage on this set of headphones is absolutely superb. Because it has such great width, many would describe it as being right there in the studio with the band or musicians before you. Users need to consider the fact that this is a closed-back set of headphones… So the soundstage is rather impressive.
The precision of the imaging overall is also quite commendable as well. You can seemingly pinpoint the location of every percussive sound, and the location of your instrumentals. These headphones can be quite an experience. Because of this, I’d say the Beyerdynamic DT770 headphones, particularly the 250 ohms version are not really all that ideal for just general music listening, but rather strictly for your professional studio work.
Unless of, course, you’re just generally into a more scintillating sonic experience… Overall, the performance of these headphones in terms sound and listener experience get a big thumbs up.
2. Structure and Design
You want headphones for not only comfort but also durability as well. This is especially because headphones are such a frequently used item in the studio. Users need something that will be a good all-round investment in this regard. Does this set of headphones meet these standards?
Structure
Users tend to observe the build quality in a set of headphones. Good habit. The build of these headphones is rather well done if you ask me. The manufacturers make them using materials such as steel for the headband, neodymium magnets, soft skin earpads for comfort and composite housing.All these materials are brought together and hand manufactured in Germany.
The Beyerdynamic DT770 headphones feel very good to the touch overall. They feel durable as they have been very meticulously built. The headband can be replaced for customizability. The earpads can also be very easily altered. A nice touch on both ends. A 3-meter coiled cable is attached to the headphones, sadly not removable. But this is not a major negative at all.
Design
I’d say these headphones have a rather retrospective aesthetic in terms of design. Not a bad thing. They subtly mimic the 80’s era of Walkmans and analog living. Beyond this, the overall design is rather simple. The brand name features on the back. The cups of each headphone cover the whole ear. The cups are pretty large (again the 80’s aesthetic), however, they are cleverly constructed enough to not look all chunky on the head.
I’d definitely say that performance and build kind of overtake the design of these headphones. They are very simplistic and minimal in terms of embellishment. But I don’t dislike this perse.
Comfort
The Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro headphones feature a pretty thick layer of padding on either cup for comfort. The headphones have a very soft velvet-like material covering the padding, making them easy on the skin. The combination of these two factors makes them suitable for long time wear. The headphones are softer than many when it comes to padding.
The headphones adjust according to the size of the user’s head for better wear and comfort. The cup holes provide wide enough an opening so that they don’t actually press against your ears. Which is good. Assuming your ears are not that huge (which is the case in all probability), the headphones free your ears from pressing against the ear cups. The holes also provide enough depth, such that your ears, typically, would not reach and press against the back.
Isolating the sound is a well-executed feature of these headphones, as previously discussed. This is actually not so common of these velvet (or velour) texture headphones, they do wonders for recording environments. The headphones are a definite yes when it comes to comfort.
3. Unboxing your headphones
The Beyerdynamic DT770 pro headphones come with a little carry bag in the box. The bag is a little flimsy though. You could possibly just use this bag for storage purposes. The box also consists of a 6.3mm adapter inside. The cable attaches to the headphones permanently, as previously mentioned. That’s pretty much it for additional trinkets.
